You always hope with ‘special’ homes that the photos, floorplans and videos translate to the viewer the true essence of what the house can do and how it’s been designed. ‘Arts and Crafts’ homes were all about simple beauty, natural materials and functional living but taking those concepts into the 21st century, and how we live now could have been a difficult brief. ‘Mafalda’ meaning ‘mighty in battle’ is incredibly apt because that is how she has been designed, to take on anything that family life can throw at it both now and long into the future and boy…have they succeeded.
The location of Nursery Road speaks for itself, you only have to turn into the privately kept road to have an idea of why you would love to live here. Mafalda is set behind a bank of laurels with a generous opening for a small fleet of cars as we would rather not park on the road.
The large covered porch, all part of the ‘Arts and Craft’ brief, leads you into the welcoming hallway where you begin to get an idea of her space, we are talking 4500 sf of incredibly clever and adaptable accommodation. Open plan is not a new concept and large connected areas for living was a big part of the A & C home. Mafalda’s take on this is around 1000 sq ft of family space that incorporates, a lounge area, dining area, games and entertaining space and of course a beautiful modern kitchen controlling things from the center. If that’s not enough two banks of tri-fold doors bring the ‘outside in’ from the house length patio with its central large covered veranda, because lets face, its going to rain at some time!
Back to the front and the hallway leads to a cloakroom, a quiet relaxing TV room because we do need some peace at time, a gym/office (depending on what you’re in to) and a further reception and this it where it gets clever. The side entrance, which saying it out loud doesn’t really do it justice, leads into a further hallway that accesses this reception, a shower room and a utility room that has been specifically designed to be able to be annexed from the rest of the ground floor, just perfect for an elderly parent, teenager needing space (or you!) and where allowed, a business….smart.
By now you will expect the upstairs to follow this clever design trend, and you’re right, it does. The main suite has a huge bedroom area that leads to a dressing room (mainly for the ladies of course) and a fabulous en-suite bathroom with walk through shower, big tub and enough space to practise your golf swing (more on that in a bit). Back down the landing and a peak down to the entrance hall from the open staircase with its seating area and impressive pendant light you have another large bathroom, because you can never have too many. Now for the clever bit, four large bedrooms (two with en-suites and dressing areas) can be connected to create mini-suites, ideal for those teenagers again, or nans and grandads that need a break.
Mafalda sits on about a third of an acre plot with a complete wrap around garden with enough space for a garage or two (subject to the normal planning guidelines). Walton Heath Golf Course is literally a wedge away, depending on your handicap of course, and if you have a dog or two Banstead Heath, Headly Common have local stunning walks, just make sure you accidently go past the Chequers Pub occasionally.
In leaves me to say in 25 years I don’t know if I have seen a more adaptable and up to date home for how we live now with the beauty and design concepts from the late 19th Century….but don’t take my word for it, come and see her.
